Hard disk that is physically located on the same computer that tries to access it for reading and/or writing data.
It contrasts with the remote hard disk, which is a hard disk that is accessed from a computer remotely using a computer network.
Data transfer speeds to and from the local hard drive are usually faster as ultra-fast cabling is used to access them (SATA, IDE, SCSI, etc.).
Instead, to transfer data to and from a remote hard drive, a network (wireless or wired) is used, generally limited to the speed of the network.
In any case, there are ultra-fast networks that can be transmitted to faster than the hard drives themselves.
