Lotus Software (prior to its acquisition by IBM, was known as the Lotus Development Corporation) is a software company, founded in 1982, based in Westford, Massachusetts (USA).

It is mostly known for its Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet application, launched in 1983, which became a standard for spreadsheets on PCs.Then in 1989, together with Ray Ozzie`s Iris Associates, they launched the Lotus Notes (email system and groupware).

In the early 1990s, the Lotus SmartSuite office suite is launched.

IBM acquired the company in 1996 for 3.5 billion dollars.
