This method was developed to replace the PDH (Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy) system for the transport of large amounts of data and for allow interoperability between equipment from different manufacturers.
With respect to their predecessors, synchronous Optical Networks provide more configuration flexibility and greater bandwidth, allowing also to reduce equipment requirements and increase reliability in the network, among other advantages.
There are multiple closely related standards that describe Synchronous optical networking:
* SDH or Synchronous Digital Hierarchy: standard developed by the ITU, documented in standard G.707 and its extension G.708
* SONET or Synchronous Optical Networking: standard defined by GR-253-CORE of Telcordia and T1.105 of ANSI.
Both are currently used: S ONET in the USA and Canada, and the SDH in the rest of the world.
