Definition of Symbolic Link (informatics)

Also called symlink, soft link or symbolic link, in computer science, a symbolic link is a special type of file that refers ("points") to another resource, usually another file or directory.The link can contain an absolute address or a relative one.

These files are supported by POSIX operating systems, UNIX, Windows Vista and Windows 7, and to some degree in 2000 and XP.

A symbolic link contains text that is interpreted by the operating system as an address or path to another file or directory.They have a function similar to Windows shortcuts or aliases on Mac OS, but with subtle differences.

A file of the symbolic link type can be copied, moved or deleted, without affecting its destination resource.As long as if the destination resource is deleted or moved, the symbolic link remains pointing to a nonexistent resource.These are called broken, hanging or orphaned links.
