DivX is a compressed video codec based on the MPEG-4 Part 2 standard.
At the beginning it was developed for video transfer over the internet, but its files were too heavy, and there were better formats for this like Microsoft's WMV , Apple Quicktime and RealNetworks RealVideo.
Two young people took Microsoft DivX as their base and developed version 3.11, which was distinguished in its name by a little face: DivX;-)
It is currently developed by DivX, Inc., who took it to the consumer market and legalized it.
This format allows an important and high quality compression for digital videos.
