(Direct access to memory or DMA).Direct access to memory or DMA is a feature of modern computers and microprocessors that allows certain hardware subsystems within the computer to access system memory for reading and/or writing , regardless of the central processing unit (CPU).
The hardware subsystems that use DMA can be: hard disk controllers, graphics cards, network cards, sound cards and accelerator cards. It is also used for transfer of data inside the chip in processors with multiple cores.
For more information see: direct access to memory.
