In communications, flow control is the process of managing the data transmission rate between two nodes, to prevent a fast transmitter from exceeding a slow receiver.
Provides a mechanism for the receiver to control the transmission rate, so that the receiving node is not saturated with data arriving from the sending node.
The flow control must be distinguished from the congestion control, which is used to control the flow of data when congestion is already occurring.
Types of flow control
* Network congestion: a prevention mechanism that provides control over the amount of data transmitted to a device.
* Windowing Flow control: mechanism used with TCP.
* Data buffer: a prevention mechanism that provides storage to hold data, compensating for variation in data transmission speeds.See: buffer.
