LOG is the usual file extension for those automatically produced files that contain an event log of certain software and operating systems.

While they may contain several things, log files are often used to display all events associated with the system or application that created them.

For example, your backup program can keep log files showing exactly what happened (or didn't happen) during a backup.

Windows maintains all kinds of log files for its various services.

The purpose of a log file is to keep track of what happens behind the scenes and, if something happens within a complex system, has access to a detailed list of events that took place before the malfunction.

Although most log files contain the file.log extension, sometimes applications can use the extension.txt or a different proprietary extension.

How to open log files
