UNIX can now refer to: * UNIX family: generic group of operating systems that share certain criteria in their design and are therefore called from the family (or type) UNIX.They are more than 100 operating systems that are considered of their family.
* UNIX operating system: subfamily of operating systems that descend from the first version created by Bell. This means that they share codes and intellectual property.
* UNIX Brand: Unix as a brand is owned by "The Open Group", a standardization organization that allows the use of that brand to any operating system that meets its standards. This is independent of whether the operating system in question is from the UNIX family or descended from the original.
